The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU has extended the ongoing nationwide strike by eight weeks to allow government more time to address all the issues in concrete terms so that the students would resume as soon as possible.

A statement by ASUU president Professor Emmanuel Osodeke
says, the decision to extend the strike was reached in Abuja on Sunday after the National Executive Council of the Union held an emergency meeting to review interactive meetings with agents of government in the last four weeks the strike had lasted without satisfaction.

ASUU is on strike for as a result of what it regarded Government’s failure to satisfactorily implement the Memorandum of Action (MOA) it signed with the Union in December 2020 on funding for revitalization of public universities both Federal and States, renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ ASUU Agreement, deployment of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS), Earned Academic Allowances, State Universities and promotion arrears as well as withheld salaries
