Manchester United are out of the Europa League after falling to a resounding 3-0 second leg defeat against Sevilla in the quarterfinal.
This comes after the Red Devils capitulated to a 2-2 draw at home in the first leg that meant the aggregate scoreline was 5-2 at the end of the clash.
Youssef En-Nesyri scored the first in the 8th minute after Harry Maguire gave the ball away poorly after receiving a pass from goalkeeper David De Gea.
Erik Ten Hag’s side looked off colour from that moment on in the encounter.
The home side thought they had gotten a second but Acuna was flagged for offside in the buildup after a VAR check.
Two minutes into the second half, former Nottingham Forest defender Loic Badé headed in beyond De Gea’s reach from a corner.
The Spanish goalkeeper then made a costly error after her miscued his control of the ball for En-Nesyri to send into the open net from distance.
It was the second error leading directly to goal in the game – the second time they have done that this season (previously against Brentford in August) and the fifth for David De Gea since the start of last season.
Manchester United have failed to win against Sevilla for the fifth time – their longest run against any opponent in Europe.
They have also lost to a Spanish opponent every year since 2017 with this season’s ouster – a run that includes Real Madrid, Valencia, Barcelona, Sevilla (twice), Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad.
Sevilla have now reached the semifinals of the Europa League seven times with the past six runs ending with them winning the trophy.
Sevilla’s reward for humbling Manchester United is a date with Juventus, who knocked out Sporting Lisbon 2-1 on aggregate, in the semifinals with the first leg in Seville on 11 May with the second leg seven days after.
Roma, who took it to extra time before seeing off Feyenoord 4-1 in Rome, will face Bayer Leverkusen in the other semifinal.
