The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority has again warned commercial motorcyclists, popularly known as Okada, to steer clear of the Bus Rapid Transit corridors in the state or risk being arrested.

LAMATA, in a campaign on Tuesday, also stressed that passengers patronising Okada plying the BRT corridors will be arrested alongside the rider.

The agency decried the spate of accidents caused by the activities of commercial motorcyclists using the BRT lanes and warned that such would no longer be condoned.

LAMATA media office, in its campaign against the use of BRT lanes by Okada, said, “Lately, the illegal activities of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada, have been on the increase on the Bus Rapid Transit lanes, especially on the Ikorodu to TBS, Oshodi to Abule Egba, and Lagos-Badagry Expressway corridors.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Okada has been banned on all major roads in Lagos State.

“Fatal accidents caused by Okada riders have been recorded in recent times, thus, necessitating a serious cleansing exercise of (their) activities on the BRT corridors.

“Henceforth, both rider and passenger on Okada on the BRT corridors will be arrested and prosecuted.”

While stressing its care for the safety of residents of Lagos and the efficiency of the state transportation system, LAMATA said the buses and drivers were usually the first casualties whenever there was an accident, adding, “Whereas, the cause of the accident – the Okada rider – goes scot-free.”

The agency “appeal for caution anytime there is an accident. Stop damaging our buses – your buses.”

“Riding Okada on the BRT lane is an offence. You have been warned; steer clear of the BRT lane. Consider your safety and the safety of others. Your safety is important to us,” LAMATA said.
