Elected chairmen and councillors in the 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas of Lagos State will get their certificates of return on Wednesday.

The Chairman of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (retd.), said the event would have taken place on Tuesday.
“But due to the public holiday on Tuesday, it will be the next working day, Wednesday,”

The Federal Government, on Monday, announced Tuesday a public holiday, to mourn the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Buhari, who died on Sunday in a London, United Kingdom hospital, is slated for burial in Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday.
The event would take place at the commission’s headquarters on Wednesday.

In the election APC clinched all 57 chairmanship seats and 375 out of 376 councillorship positions in the local government election held on Saturday, July 12, 2025.

However, the Peoples Democratic Party secured victory in Ward D of the Yaba LCDA, where its candidate, Babatunde Dosunmu, defeated the APC contender.

Justice Okikiolu-Ighile (retd.) announced the results on Sunday at the commission’s headquarters in Sabo Yaba, Lagos.

Opposition parties in the state have protested the victory of the APC in the election, alleging irregularities at the polls.

The PDP’s Deputy Chairman in the state, Tai Benedict, said he was not disappointed at the result and commended the party’s supporters.
Benedict said the APC’s “aggressive campaigns” meant something, saying the APC couldn’t pull such a number of votes.

“I am not disappointed. I know that with the very aggressive campaign (of the APC), we all know what it means.

“And I kept telling some people that if you calculate this election, all the chairmanship elections in all the 20 LGAs and 30 LCDAs if you calculate it, these kinds of votes they have, is that possible at this point? Is that realistic at this point? We know it is not realistic,” he said.

LASIEC chairman, however, said it would defer to the Election Appeal Tribunal to address any issues concerning the poll.

The Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Kazeem Alogba, on Friday inaugurated two LG Election Appeal Tribunals.

Each panel, which will sit simultaneously on Lagos Island and in Ikeja, is made up of four chief magistrates and is chaired by a retired high court judge.

Justice Taofikat Oyinkan-Abdullahi (retd.) will lead the Lagos Island panel, with Magistrates Michael Olubi, Olaitan Ajayi, Salamah Matepo, and Hotepo Lazarus as members.

The Ikeja panel will be chaired by Justice Sherifah Solebo (retd.) and will have Magistrates Davies Rasak, Oluwatosin Fowowe-Erusiafe, Adepeju Odusanya, and Lynda Balogun as members.
