The Lagos State Taskforce intensified its enforcement of the ban on commercial motorcycles, known as Okadas, arresting 63 operators in a single sweep targeting restricted routes across the metropolis.

The operation, aimed at curbing violations on highways, bridges, and other prohibited areas, underscores the state’s commitment to enhancing road safety and public order.

The enforcement exercise focused on high-traffic areas, including Mile 2 Oke Bridge, Mile 2 Under Bridge, Berger Suya, Amuwo Odofin, and Apple Junction in Festac, where recalcitrant Okada operators were found disregarding state traffic regulations.

CSP Adetayo Akerele, Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, disclosed that the agency, in collaboration with other security outfits, conducted the operation to address persistent violations that threaten public safety.

“The ban on Okada operations in certain areas was put in place to ensure the safety and well-being of all Lagosians, and we will not tolerate any breach of this order. Those who continue to operate in restricted areas, endangering the lives of road users, will face the full wrath of the law,” Akerele stated.

Despite repeated warnings and public sensitization campaigns, some operators have remained defiant, prompting the Taskforce to escalate its zero-tolerance approach.

The 63 motorcycles impounded during the operation have been confiscated, and legal action will be pursued against the violators.

Akerele emphasized the state government’s dedication to the THEMES PLUS Agenda, which prioritizes safety and security for all residents.

He urged Okada operators to comply with regulations and operate only in permitted areas. Additionally, he called on the public to support enforcement efforts by reporting violations and refraining from patronizing illegal Okada services to ensure their own safety.

The Lagos State Taskforce vowed to sustain its patrols and enforcement activities, particularly in areas prone to illegal Okada operations, to maintain order and protect road users.
