The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is set to arraign 21 of the 93 suspected internet fraudsters arrested at a hotel in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The suspects, apprehended at a hotel within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library complex on Sunday, were brought to the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Friday morning to appear before Justice Deinde Dipeolu.
All of the men are facing charges under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition) Act of 2015 and the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud-Related Offences Act of 2006.
In a statement on Thursday, the EFCC clarified that the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library was not the target of the operation.
The agency’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, said the arrests were based on intelligence that the suspects were holding a pool party to celebrate their alleged illicit activities.
Oyewale added that the party had been moved to the hotel within the library to avoid detection.
He also stated that the suspects’ profiling indicated that almost all of them were involved in impersonation, identity theft, and internet fraud.
