A former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai has submitted a petition to the Police Service Commission (PSC) over what he described as “alleged unprofessional conduct, abuse of office and serial violations of the Police Act,” by some officers of the Kaduna State Police Command.
El-Rufai, in an 11 page-document titled: ‘Unprofessional conduct, Abuse of Office and Serial Violation of the police Act 2020 and regulations by some officers of the Kaduna state command of the Nigeria Police’, requested an immediate, impartial, and exhaustive investigation into the unlawful, and unconstitutional conduct of some officers of the Command.
El-Rufai, now an African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, informed the PSC that he had earlier petitioned the Inspector-General of Police on the unlawful acts executed by some officers and men of the Police since the resumption of the current commissioner in Kaduna on December 30, 2024.
In the petition, he condemned the disruption of a meeting of the ADC coalition in Kaduna, alleging that the failure of the police to stop the assault on the party gathering last week reflects a breakdown of policing under the current administration.
He said: “I am writing as a citizen of Nigeria and former Governor of Kaduna State to formally lodge this complaint and demand an immediate, impartial, and exhaustive investigation into the unlawful and unconstitutional conduct of the commissioner of police and some officers of the Kaduna State Police Command.
“This will assist the Police Service Commission (the commission) in discharging its function under the constitution and section 6 (1)(a) to (e) of the commission’s enabling Act of 2011.
“I submit this petition with a profound sense of responsibility as a citizen of Nigeria and a public servant who has served our nation at national and sub-national levels, including dedicating eight years to improving Kaduna State for all its residents.
“I am motivated by concern for the Nigeria Police, which, despite challenges, remains the primary law enforcement institution in the country.
“It is the duty of all citizens not only to support it but also to ensure that the commission can exercise its regulatory powers to enforce discipline and promote ethical conduct among all police officers.
“This objective can only be achieved if the commission’s attention is consistently drawn to conduct by officers who served interests contrary to those outlined in section 4 of the police Act 2020.
