President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday night held discussions with leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and representatives of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum at the State House, amid rising concerns over insecurity and a planned nationwide protest.

The meeting took place hours before the NLC’s scheduled mass action on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, over escalating banditry, kidnappings, and other security challenges across the country.

NLC President Joe Ajaero, who led the labour delegation, told journalists after the meeting that the union would review the discussions internally before taking a final decision on the protest.

“We came for consultation with the President, and we are finished. We have to go back to our meeting and continue deliberations,” Ajaero said, stressing that no single individual could unilaterally call off the planned action.

He added that the NLC’s organs would consider the issues raised and announce the next steps, possibly on Wednesday.

Also present was the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, who said the meeting was granted to allow dialogue with concerned citizens. Representatives of the governors’ forum were also in attendance, highlighting a joint effort to address the security crisis and its economic impact.

The late-night engagement underscored the government’s urgency to prevent disruptions, as the NLC had mobilised affiliates nationwide for peaceful rallies demanding decisive action on insecurity.

While details of commitments from the meeting were not disclosed, discussions reportedly focused on coordinated measures to restore safety and stability.
