The Nigerian Railway Corporation, NRC, on Tuesday commenced its 50 per cent discounted Yuletide train services nationwide, recording a strong passenger turnout as Nigerians moved early to take advantage of reduced fares for the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Across major rail corridors, including the Lagos–Ibadan and Abuja–Kaduna standard gauge lines, as well as key narrow gauge routes, stations witnessed brisk activity with several departures operating near full capacity.

Officials said advance bookings and early-morning traffic reflected widespread public enthusiasm for the Federal Government–approved fare reduction.

The festive rail initiative, which runs from December 23, 2025 to January 4, 2026, offers passengers a 50 per cent discount on train fares nationwide, easing travel costs during one of the country’s busiest movement periods. The programme is designed to encourage rail travel as families journey across states to reunite with loved ones.

Passengers who spoke with NRC officials at various stations described the initiative as timely and economically relieving, particularly for families and group travellers facing rising transportation costs during the festive season. Many praised the affordability and relative comfort of rail transport compared with road travel at peak periods.

The Corporation said the Yuletide discount forms part of the Renewed Hope Agenda of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aimed at reducing the burden of transportation, promoting inclusive mobility and strengthening confidence in rail transport as a safe and reliable option.

Speaking on the commencement of operations, NRC Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Kayode Opeifa, assured passengers of the Corporation’s readiness to maintain safe, efficient and customer-focused services throughout the festive period.

He said operational planning had been intensified to manage the anticipated surge in passenger numbers.

According to the NRC, both standard gauge and narrow gauge services are fully operational, with enhanced security, safety protocols and customer service arrangements deployed at stations and onboard trains.

The measures are intended to ensure smooth operations and protect passengers during the high-traffic season.

Passengers travelling on standard gauge routes were advised to continue using NRC-approved online booking platforms, while those on narrow gauge services can purchase tickets directly at designated railway stations.

The Corporation reaffirmed its commitment to seamless festive operations and urged passengers to cooperate with railway officials and comply with travel guidelines to ensure safe and orderly journeys throughout the Yuletide discount period.
