The All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged victorious in five of the six Area Council chairmanship positions contested in the Federal Capital Territory council election, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) securing the remaining seat.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially declared the following winners after collation and announcement of results from all six area councils:
– Bwari Area Council — Hon. Joshua Ishaku (APC)
– Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) — Hon. Chris Garki (APC)
– Gwagwalada Area Council — Hon. Kasim Mohammed (PDP)
– Kuje Area Council — Hon. Samuel Danjuma Shekwolo (APC)
– Kwali Area Council — Hon. Nuhu Daniel Kwali (APC)
– Abaji Area Council — Hon. Abdullahi Umar Abubakar (APC)
The results give the APC control of five councils (Bwari, AMAC, Kuje, Kwali, and Abaji), while the PDP retains Gwagwalada through Hon. Kasim Mohammed, who polled 22,165 votes to defeat his APC rival.
INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner for the FCT, Aminu Kasimu Idris, described the exercise as generally peaceful and credible, with effective use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and minimal incidents reported across polling units.
Turnout was however relatively low in many areas, a trend observed throughout the voting day on February 21.
The poll were conducted to fill vacancies arising from court nullifications, resignations, and other circumstances affecting the previous office holders.
The newly elected chairmen are expected to be sworn in shortly to assume leadership of their respective councils.
The outcome strengthens the APC’s dominance in the FCT political landscape ahead of future elections, while the PDP’s hold on Gwagwalada provides continued opposition representation in the territory.
