The Lagos State Government on Tuesday said it arrested 86 beggars, nine children and 12 suspected miscreants during an ongoing monitoring and enforcement operation aimed at addressing street begging and restoring order in public spaces.

The Commissioner for the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a post on his X handle.

According to him, 25 beggars were first arrested in Agege during the enforcement patrol before the team moved to other areas.

“During our ongoing monitoring and enforcement patrol today, 25 beggars were arrested in Agege as part of efforts to address street begging and restore order in public spaces.

“The patrol team has since moved to Ketu, and as of 1200hrs, a total of 86 beggars, 9 children and 12 miscreants have been apprehended across the areas covered,” Wahab stated.

He added that those arrested would be profiled and transferred to relevant government agencies for further action.

“Those arrested will be profiled and handed over to the appropriate government agencies for further action in line with existing laws and social intervention protocols.

“We will continue these operations to discourage street begging, protect vulnerable persons and maintain order across Lagos,” he said.

The operation forms part of a statewide campaign against street begging and related nuisances that has intensified since early 2026.

On Monday, Lagos State Government also apprehended an individual for allegedly dumping refuse on a public road in the state.

According to Wahab, the suspect was arrested during an early morning patrol by enforcement officers.
