The Osun State Police Command has warned residents against the spread of false information alleging banditry invasion in parts of the state, describing such reports as misleading and capable of causing unnecessary panic.

In a release signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, the Command said extensive security assessments and intelligence gathering had not substantiated the claims being circulated on social media and other communication platforms.

The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, warned individuals and groups involved in creating and disseminating false security alerts to desist, noting that the spread of unverified information undermines public confidence and threatens public peace and security.

The Command advised residents to verify security-related information through official channels before sharing, stressing that anyone found spreading false information capable of causing public disorder would be investigated and prosecuted in line with the law.

The Police reassured residents of its commitment to protecting lives and property, urging them to remain calm, vigilant and go about their lawful activities without fear.

It added that covert operatives and violent crime response teams have been deployed across the state to strengthen security.

The Command also encouraged members of the public to report any suspicious movements or security concerns to the nearest police station or relevant security agencies for prompt action.
