The Nigerian House of Representatives is set to take a decisive step toward the establishment of state police as lawmakers prepare to vote on key constitutional amendment bills this Thursday.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who also chairs the House Committee on Constitution Review, disclosed this during a media briefing shortly after plenary. He said the House has prioritised the creation of state police ahead of other proposed constitutional amendments.

He further directed all members currently outside Abuja on oversight duties to suspend their assignments and return to the National Assembly in preparation for the voting session.

The state police bill, which is sponsored by the Deputy Speaker alongside 14 other lawmakers, is one of the most significant proposals under consideration in the ongoing constitutional review process in the House of Representatives of Nigeria.
