The Lagos State Government has commenced the Project Management, Operations and Design (PMOD) Consultancy for the Omi Eko Project, describing it as another major step towards transforming water transport across the state.
The kick-off meeting, held in Lagos, brought together government officials, development partners and consultants who will oversee the project’s implementation.
Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the consultancy would provide the technical leadership, operational guidance and project management expertise required for the successful delivery of the project.
He described the Omi Eko Project as one of the most ambitious investments in inland waterways transport in Africa, noting that it is expected to improve connectivity, reduce travel time, enhance passenger safety and stimulate economic activity across Lagos.
According to him, the initiative will also support the state’s environmental sustainability goals by deploying cleaner transport solutions, including electric ferry services.
Osiyemi said the responsibilities of the PMOD consultant extend beyond project management and design, adding that the team would coordinate stakeholders, support implementation and ensure the project is delivered in line with global standards.
“The Omi Eko Project represents one of the most ambitious investments in inland waterways transport in Africa. Beyond modern infrastructure and electric ferry technology, the project is designed to improve connectivity, reduce travel time, enhance passenger safety, stimulate economic activity and contribute meaningfully to environmental sustainability through cleaner transport solutions,” he said.
He expressed appreciation to the French Development Agency (AFD), the European Investment Bank (EIB), and the European Union (EU) for supporting the state’s vision to develop a sustainable urban mobility system.
Speaking on behalf of the consultancy team, Head of Delegation and Director, International Unit, Planet SA, Mr. Dimitris Galanis, reaffirmed the firm’s commitment to delivering the assignment in line with international best practices.
He said the consultants would provide project management, operational planning and technical expertise to support the initiative’s implementation.
“We are honoured to partner with the Lagos State Government and its development partners on this transformational project. Our team is committed to providing world-class project management, operational planning and technical expertise to ensure the successful implementation of the Omi Eko Project,” Galanis said.
The Omi Eko Project is a flagship initiative of the Lagos State Government aimed at modernising water transport through the development of jetties, electric ferry services and improved operational systems to provide safer, faster and more environmentally sustainable water transport for Lagos residents.
