The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has commenced moves to remove illegal structures and tackle encroachment within the Olusosun Dumpsite, to protect the facility and ensure uninterrupted waste management operations.
The exercise began on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, with the issuance of removal notices to owners and occupants of shanties and other illegal structures identified within the dumpsite.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the planned removal was necessary to safeguard the integrity and accessibility of the facility, which remains critical to Lagos State’s waste management operations.
Gbadegesin said the affected owners and occupants had been directed to remove their structures and vacate the area within a stipulated period, in accordance with the law.
He explained that unchecked encroachment and other illegal activities within the dumpsite could hinder safe and efficient waste management operations, while also compromising the orderly use of the facility.
According to him, LAWMA was committed to maintaining a well-organised waste management system capable of supporting a clean, safe and liveable Lagos.
He urged those affected by the removal notices to comply with the directive within the specified period, stressing that protecting waste management infrastructure was essential to the overall environmental well-being of the state.
Gbadegesin reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to promoting sustainable waste management and ensuring that its facilities remained accessible, functional and properly organised.
