In a bid to ease mounting traffic congestion caused by ongoing structural repairs on the Ifako Bridge expansion joint, the Lagos State Government has temporarily suspended the enforcement of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane restrictions on Eko Bridge and the Odo Iya-Alaro axis.
The directive, approved by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, is a strategic and time-bound response designed to relieve pressure on alternative routes feeding into the Lagos Mainland.
The move aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus Agenda, which prioritises sustainable mobility and adaptive infrastructure planning.
“We are fully cognizant of the immense strain currently imposed on key ingress routes into the Lagos Mainland,” Giwa said.
“This tactical suspension of BRT lane enforcement is a calculated response designed to deliver immediate relief, reduce commuting time, and preserve the fluidity of vehicular movement throughout the duration of the bridge repairs.”
The suspension, effective immediately, permits general vehicles to use previously restricted BRT corridors on the affected routes, particularly during peak hours.
The goal is to increase road capacity and reduce gridlock caused by the partial closure of the Ifako-bound carriageway on the Third Mainland axis.
However, Giwa cautioned that commercial buses and articulated vehicles must continue adhering strictly to safety guidelines and loading rules to prevent additional road pressure and potential safety risks.
To ensure compliance and orderliness, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has intensified its operations across the affected corridors.
The agency has deployed additional personnel and equipment to monitor traffic flow, prevent abuse of the temporary measure, and swiftly address any incidents that arise.
LASTMA General Manager, Bakare Oki Olalekan, affirmed the agency’s readiness to manage the adjustment with efficiency and professionalism.
“Our operatives are tactically deployed to monitor compliance, coordinate flow, and execute swift on-ground interventions as the need arises. We implore all road users to uphold traffic discipline and demonstrate civic responsibility during this period,” he said.
Motorists are also encouraged to consider alternative routes, adjust travel times, and stay updated through official channels, including digital platforms, radio advisories, and the LASTMA toll-free hotline: 0800-0052-7862 (0800-00LASTMA).
The Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment to responsive governance and innovative traffic management, particularly during critical infrastructure upgrades.
