President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said 2026 marks the start of a more robust phase of economic growth for Nigeria, citing reforms, improving macroeconomic indicators, and renewed investor confidence as key drivers.

In his New Year message, the President expressed optimism about the nation’s economic trajectory, noting that reforms undertaken in 2025 are beginning to yield tangible results for citizens. He said Nigeria closed 2025 on a strong note, with quarterly GDP growth projecting annualised growth above 4 per cent. Inflation fell below 15 per cent, trade surpluses were maintained, and the exchange rate remained stable.

The Nigerian Stock Exchange outperformed its peers, posting a 48.12 per cent gain, while foreign reserves stood at $45.4 billion as of December 29, 2025. Foreign direct investment rose sharply to $720 million in the third quarter, up from $90 million in the previous quarter, reflecting renewed investor confidence recognised by Moody’s, Fitch, and Standard & Poor’s.

President Tinubu highlighted ongoing tax reforms, aimed at creating a fair and competitive fiscal framework, and commended states aligned with the national tax harmonisation agenda. He also reaffirmed the administration’s focus on fiscal discipline and infrastructure investment, including roads, power, ports, railways, airports, healthcare, education, and agriculture.

On security, the President noted continued threats from criminal and terrorist groups, emphasising military operations in the Northwest and Northeast and the importance of decentralised policing alongside regulated forest guards to tackle banditry and terrorism.

Looking ahead, 2026 will focus on inclusive growth through programmes like the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme, expected to empower at least 1,000 people in each of Nigeria’s 8,809 wards, bringing over 10 million Nigerians into productive economic activity.

President Tinubu urged citizens to embrace unity, patriotism, and shared responsibility, concluding by wishing Nigerians a peaceful and prosperous New Year and praying for the protection of the country and its security forces.
