The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has clarified the recent incident involving operatives of its Uyo Zonal Directorate and staff members of the Uyo University Teaching Hospital, UUTH saying it was for administrative purpose not arrest.
In a statement by the Commission, the EFCC explained that the presence of its operatives at the hospital on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, was aimed at authenticating a document, and not for any arrest operation.
The Commission further stated that contrary to reports circulating in some quarters, no member of staff of the hospital was arrested or detained, adding that those who accompanied the operatives to the zonal command did so voluntarily and were not held against their will.
Reacting to allegations of brutality against hospital staff, the EFCC described the claims as disturbing and unacceptable.
However, the Commission noted that it has not seen any physical evidence of bodily harm or injuries sustained by any of the affected staff members.
Despite this, the anti-graft agency said it has ordered a full investigation into the incident and assured Nigerians that any operative found to have acted outside the agency’s Standard Operating Procedures will face appropriate disciplinary measures.
The Commission also appreciated stakeholders who have intervened in ensuring an amicable resolution of the matter, while reassuring the public and medical personnel at the Uyo University Teaching Hospital that the incident was an isolated case.
The EFCC warned against attempts by what it described as “fifth columnists” to exploit the situation in order to undermine the ongoing fight against corruption in Nigeria.
Reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, the Commission maintained that it respects the rights of every Nigerian and will continue to carry out its constitutional mandate without intimidation, distraction, or violation of citizens’ fundamental rights.
