The Oyo state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has expressed shock over the death of one of its members during the attack on schools in Ahoro-Esinele community, Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
A statement issued by the Chairman, Comrade Hassan Fatai, and Secretary, Comrade Olukayode Salami, also condemned the kidnapping of the school principal, Mrs. Rachael Alamu, and some pupils.
“The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) is deeply saddened by the tragic killing of one of our members, Mr. Joel Adesiyan, during the violent attack on schools in the Ahoro-Esinele community,” the statement said.
“The incident, which has sent shockwaves across the education sector, represents yet another painful reminder of the dangers faced by teachers in the line of duty.”
The Union said it had received confirmation that the slain teacher was wearing the official NUT uniform at the time of the attack.
“This makes the loss even more heartbreaking, as he died while actively serving the nation and its children. We condemn, in the strongest terms, this senseless act of violence,” it said.
“No teacher should ever pay the ultimate price simply for carrying out their sacred responsibility to educate and nurture the future of our country.”
The NUT said it stands in solidarity with the family of the departed colleague, the affected school community, and all teachers who continue to serve under threatening conditions.
“We mourn with heavy hearts and extend our deepest condolences to his spouse, children, relatives, and professional colleagues. May they be strengthened during this devastating period.”
The Union called on government at all levels to intensify security around schools, especially in vulnerable communities, and to intensify efforts to ensure the safe return of those in captivity.
“Teachers must not be left unprotected. The safety of educators is integral to the survival of the education system itself,” the statement added.
“We remain committed to supporting the bereaved family, advocating for justice, and ensuring that the memory of our fallen colleague is honoured with action, not just words.”
