Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has successfully leveraged the platform of the Africa Investment Forum (AIF) in Rabat, Morocco, to showcase “Project Green,” the state’s ambitious Green Line Railway, to key partners and international financiers.
The presentation, conducted alongside representatives from the Federal Government, the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI), and the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), served as a decisive opportunity to reaffirm the state’s significant progress in developing a robust, functional, and modern transport network.
The proposed Green Line is central to the Lagos Strategic Transport Master Plan (STMP) managed by LAMATA, underscoring the state’s commitment to an integrated, fully connected, and environmentally responsible public transit system. This new corridor builds substantially on the existing momentum established by the successful Blue and ongoing Red Lines, signaling a comprehensive move toward decongesting the state’s vital economic arteries.
The project’s emphasis on electric rail technology is a core reflection of Lagos’s dedication to sustainable infrastructure development.
The Green Line is conceptualized as a crucial 70-kilometre electric rail corridor designed to link the high-density Marina district directly to the burgeoning Lekki Free Trade Zone.
This strategic alignment is specifically engineered to mitigate the severe traffic congestion currently plaguing the Lekki-Epe corridor, while simultaneously stimulating significant new commercial and industrial growth along this rapidly expanding economic zone. The electric system is anticipated to reduce the reliance on road transport and lower the overall carbon footprint of commuter traffic.
Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed significant optimism regarding the outcome of the engagements in Rabat, noting that the strong interest demonstrated by international financiers had significantly exceeded the state’s projections. The Governor hailed the robust response as a powerful vote of confidence, not just in the viability of the infrastructure plan itself, but also in the underlying governance, stability of the economy, and long-term trajectory of Lagos State.
The Governor asserted Lagos’s emergent role as a pioneer in urban development, declaring that the state is actively shaping the future of urban mobility across the African continent. He emphasized that the administration is forging ahead with clear purpose and accelerating momentum, utilizing these key partnerships and securing crucial capital to transform its visionary transportation plans into tangible, operational infrastructure.
