The Supreme Court of Nigeria has dismissed an appeal filed by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), affirming that the party’s November 2025 national convention held in Ibadan was unlawful.
The appeal, led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, sought to overturn an earlier ruling by the Court of Appeal which nullified the convention. However, the apex court upheld the lower court’s decision, effectively invalidating the outcomes of the Ibadan gathering.
The ruling represents a major setback for the PDP faction that had relied on the convention to legitimize its leadership structure. Legal observers say the judgment reinforces the judiciary’s stance on strict compliance with party constitutions and electoral guidelines in conducting internal processes.
The decision is expected to deepen internal realignments within the PDP as stakeholders weigh their next steps ahead of the 2027 general elections. It may also influence ongoing negotiations among party leaders seeking to restore cohesion and avoid further fragmentation.
