The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has ordered a nationwide enforcement operation targeting vehicles operating without registration plates, as well as those with concealed, altered, or defaced number plates.
The directive was issued during a monthly strategic meeting with senior police officers at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
According to the IGP, the rising use of unregistered or deliberately hidden number plates poses a serious threat to public safety and national security, as it is often exploited by criminals to evade detection and commit offences.
He stressed that vehicle registration is essential for crime prevention, intelligence gathering, and effective law enforcement.
All Police Commands have now been instructed to begin immediate enforcement operations across the country. Offending vehicles will be stopped, impounded, and processed according to existing laws.
The IGP also warned that there will be no preferential treatment in the enforcement exercise, urging all vehicle owners to ensure full compliance with registration requirements.
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening public safety and improving national security through strict enforcement of lawful measures.
